International Management Certificate Application

Purpose of gradute certificate concentration

The Scheller College of Business’s graduate certificate in international management is an option in the Georgia Tech Master of Business Administration (MBA program). This concentration for MBA students focuses on the skills and knowledge to prepare you to pursue more effectively a career in international business, investment, trade, or global operations, stateside or overseas. The certificate program is also open, on a selective basis, to other graduate students enrolled at Georgia Tech. In this certificate, we value the capacity to understand the skills required to compete effectively across cultures in increasingly globalized, though fragment, markets as well as some functional capacity in a chosen foreign language.

Requirements of application

Please note, the Graduate Certificate in International Management is open to current Georgia Tech graduate students only (primarily MBA students). Non-MBA students can petition to complete the certificate if their enrolled graduate program allows the completion of the certificate requirements.

The certificate program requirements

MBA and other qualified graduate students pursuing the graduate certificate program in International Management have three requirements to fulfill for the certificate, in addition to the other requirements of the MBA degree or others for students in different degree programs.

Requirement #1:

In pursuing the certificate program, students in international management must complete the following of three graduate management courses or their equivalent:

• MGT 6185 International Business Environments
• MGT 6070 International Finance
• MGT 6335 International Marketing

In addition, students are encouraged to participate in one of the MBA Global Practicum, with course credit, offered every Spring semester which will count towards one of the above courses. Students may alternatively complete part or all of the above required courses, based on credit equivalence, at an approved business school or partner business school overseas.

Requirement #2:

Each student must have demonstrable functional proficiency in at least one foreign language. For those who have adequate previous language training, this will be established through prior course credits (append a transcript), demonstrable proficiency by virtue of prior work overseas, or through a standard examination and testing procedure approved by the Director of the MBA program. For those who are deficient in language ability, the programs in the School of Modern Languages (e.g. regular language courses, Georgia Tech Summer Language Institutes) is available as part of the MBA curriculum.

Students can also elect to take language courses as part of their overseas educational experience at an officially sanctioned partner university.

Requirement #3:

Each student is expected to have some work in a country corresponding to his or her language of specialization.

This overseas experience requirements may consist of one of the following:

• A period of study of not less than one semester at a partner business school for which the equivalent course credit will be granted by the Graduate Committee as part of the MBA program,
• An internship in a foreign firm or organization or overseas subsidiary of an American corporation arranged by Georgia Tech or through one of our partner universities in Europe, Asia, etc.
• Prior work experience overseas before joining the MBA program.

One of the above three or a combination meets the exposure requirement.
