Meet the Scheller College of Business alumni who are on Major and Minor League Baseball rosters.

March 18 marks Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Opening Day on an international stage. Around the world, baseball fans will gear up to watch the Dodgers and Cubs kick off the season in the Tokyo Series. Domestic Opening Day for all other teams is March 27 with 14 games being played across the country from California's Dodger Stadium to New York's Yankee Stadium

Throughout the season, Georgia Tech baseball fans will be keeping an eye on a group of exceptional athletes who have excelled on the field and in the classroom at the Scheller College of Business. These Scheller alumni, now making waves in both Major and Minor League Baseball, embody the spirit of dedication and excellence that defines Georgia Tech.

Major League Alumni

Joey Bart

Joey Bart

Current MLB Team: Pirates 

Position: Catcher 

Played for Georgia Tech: 2016 – 2018 

Standout Stat: Bart was the highest MLB Draft pick in Georgia Tech history and the highest selection by the Giants since 1985.

 

Xzavion Curry

Xzavion Curry

Current MLB Team: Miami Marlins 

Position: Pitcher 

Played for Georgia Tech: 2017 - 2018 

Standout Stat: Curry made 15 starts for the Jackets, tying the team high.

 

Buck Farmer

Buck Farmer

Current MLB Team: Cincinnati Reds  

Position: Pitcher 

Played for Georgia Tech: 2010 - 2012 

Standout Stat: Farmer was named ACC Pitcher of the Week and College Sports Madness National Pitcher of the Week after a complete game shoutout against Duke in 2012. 

 

Brant Hurter

Current MLB Team: Detroit Tigers 

Position: Pitcher 

Played for Georgia Tech: 2018 - 2020 

Standout Stat: Hurter is the only Georgia Tech pitcher to hold opponents to a sub-.200 batting average.  

 

 Kyle McCann

Kyle McCann

Current MLB Team: Oakland A’s 

Position: Catcher 

Played for Georgia Tech: 2017 - 2018 

Standout Stat: During the 2018 season, McCann hit .300 with 15 home runs (including three grand slams), a triple, 10 doubles, and 37 walks.  

 

Minor League Alumni

Dawson Brown

Dawson Brown

Current MiLB Team: Arizona Diamondbacks 

Position: Pitcher 

Played for Georgia Tech: 2021 - 2023 

Standout Stat: Brown posted a career-best performance against Tennessee Tech throwing 12 strikeouts in six innings.

 

Jonathan Hughes

Jonathan Hughes

Current MiLB Team: Baltimore Orioles 

Position: Pitcher 

Played for Georgia Tech: 2016 - 2019 

Standout Stat: In 2019, Hughes made five straight scoreless appearances, including two shutouts over UCLA. 

 

Jackson Finley

Jackson Finley

Current MiLB Team: Oakland Athletics 

Position: Pitcher 

Played for Georgia Tech: 2020 - 2022 

Standout Stat: At the 2022 NCAA Knoxville Regional, Finley held Alabama State, allowing just one run in three hits, striking out two and walking none.

 

Andrew Jenkins

Andrew Jenkins

Current MiLB Team: Detroit Tigers 

Position: First Base 

Played for Georgia Tech: 2020 -2021 

Standout Stat: Jenkins started in 40 games in the 2021 season, helping the Jackets to a 20-12 record in games he started at first.

 

Luke Waddell

Luke Waddell

Current MiLB Team: Atlanta Braves 

Position: Short Stop 

Played for Georgia Tech: 2018 - 2020 

Standout Stat: In the abbreviated 2020 season, Waddell started all 16 games at shortstop and struck out just seven times.
