Scheller Goes Inside Norfolk Southern

Norfolk Southern, one of the most recognized names in the railroad transportation industry, is a subsidiary of the Norfolk Southern Corporation, founded in 1982. However, the company has operated for over 200 years as other railroads merged to form the company it is today.

Scheller’s connection with Norfolk Southern continues to grow from collaborations with their university engagement and talent acquisition staff. Several undergraduate and MBA student groups have attended building tours, gaining insights into career possibilities in logistics, operations, business analytics, technology, and more.

BSBA ’23
Marketing Analyst, Norfolk Southern

"Choosing where to go next after graduation was no small feat, but thankfully, the Scheller College of Business served as an excellent “early career incubator” in helping me take that next step in my journey and hit the ground running from there. Now, as a current marketing associate on one of Norfolk Southern’s Industrial Products teams, I’ve had the joy and privilege of working at a company that offers exciting opportunities for growth, a talented community shaped by strong leadership, and interesting work that directly powers our communities and moves our economy forward. On top of that, Norfolk Southern’s stunning new headquarters in Midtown not only keeps me rooted in the area's industrious grit, artistic soul, and entrepreneurial spirit—it also means I’m never too far from home."

“My experience at Scheller played a pivotal role in enhancing my skills and broadening my perspective on business and technology. This has been instrumental in my current position at Norfolk Southern. The opportunities to apply leadership frameworks I learned in the MBA program at Scheller helped tremendously in mobilizing resources, beginning everything with trust, being a servant leader, serving customers excellently, and fostering collaboration and coaching at Norfolk Southern. Their principle of always improving reflect my personal dedication to excellence and continual growth grounded in an ethos of doing the right thing the right way. A strong belief in collaboration and championing a “team of teams” mentality all constitute fundamental values and principles that were honed during my MBA at Scheller.”

Product Owner, Norfolk Southern

Norfolk Southern stood out to me because it seemed to have a lot of opportunities and an exciting rotational program. I found both to be true. After I graduated with my undergraduate degree, I was hired as a Management Trainee in the Mechanical Department. I am halfway through my MBA program at Scheller but have already gained a lifetime of knowledge and skills. This is what I like about the MBA program. It’s close to their headquarters, and I can attend in-person classes and apply what I am learning each week to what I see at my job day-to-day. It is one of the main reasons that I chose Scheller.

BSBA ’24
Former Marketing Intern, Norfolk Southern

When I saw an opportunity to work in a Marketing Analyst position at Norfolk Southern, I thought it would be a great chance for me to expand my knowledge of freight trains while incorporating and utilizing my marketing and analytical skills. The Scheller curriculum, professors, and advisors do a phenomenal job of preparing their students for internships, co-ops, and early career opportunities, so I was able to utilize the leadership, analytical, critical thinking, and data visualization skills I developed at Scheller during my internship.
