Program Adds New Computing & Management Minor

The Denning Technology & Management program has added a new minor for Computer Science and Information Technology Management majors.

The goals of the new minor, the first of its kind in the nation, is to produce computer scientists who understand both market forces and the financial implications of technology investment, while participating business students will acquire the skills necessary to understand the relationship among software infrastructure, business practices, and organizational structure and strategy.

Computer Science student Sheena Patel will be participating in T & M's new minor. She says, "The Computing & Management minor has opened my eyes to the benefits and opportunities of combining technology and business and its importance in the world today."

The inaugural class of 10 computer science and five IT management students will begin this fall. The 22-credit program includes courses such as:

  • Representing Structure and Behavior
  • Data Manipulation for Science & Industry
  • Next Generation Computing Technologies

Welcome T & M class of 2014 Computing & Management minors!

Denning T & M Students Travel to China

Led by program director Linda Oldham, 12 T & M students traveled to Beijing, China May 6 &8211; 14 to visit the Beijing Institute of Technology and business operations centers of three corporate affiliates.

The team toured Boeing's Commercial Aviation Services, Caterpillar's Asia Pacific Distribution Center and Siemens' Industry Automation Division. The group met with representatives from the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission, and traveled to Caterpillar and Siemens' offices in Tianjin. Discussion topics included business models and distribution systems.

Students made time for some sight-seeing, including stops at the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square and The Gate of Heavenly Peace. This trip provided a first-hand opportunity for students to become familiar with the daily business operations of our affiliates while immersing themselves in the Chinese culture.

Denning T & M Program Welcomes New Corporate Affiliate

We are pleased to welcome Capital One as our newest Corporate Affiliate. Headquartered in McLean, Virginia, Capital One offers a broad range of financial products and services to small businesses, consumers and commercial clients.

"This is the beginning of a great partnership!" said Lauren Binder, Senior Campus Recruiter for Capital One. "I am excited about the students we will have an opportunity to work with."

Capital One is the Denning T & M program's ninth corporate affiliate in the 2011 – 2012 academic year, joining recent affiliates Boeing and The Home Depot.

Founded in 1988 by Richard D. Fairbank, Capital One has grown to be one of America's largest consumer franchises with more than 45 million customer accounts and approximately 1,000 branch locations in the United States.

Denning Scholar Delivers Commencement Address

Corbin Klett, T & M Class of 2012 and Aerospace Engineering graduate, was selected as the Student Reflection Speaker for Georgia Tech's Undergraduate Commencement exercises on May 5, 2012.

Corbin was chosen from five finalists by a panel of faculty, administrators, and students. His three-minute speech focused on the accomplishments of the Class of 2012 and included a challenge to carry their strong work ethic into their future careers.

"At this stage of the game, 'Go Jackets' is not just a chant, it's an imperative," he instructed his fellow graduates.

Citing the Strauss-Howe generational theory, which maintains that the Millennial generation will "reclaim and rebuild broken societal institutions in response to a perceived threat to the nation's survival," Corbin told the audience that he is inspired by the work already done by his Tech classmates, and has no doubt that their future work will change the world. After a rousing applause, Corbin was presented with a token of appreciation from Georgia Tech President, G.P. "Bud" Peterson.

T & M Student Elected GT Student Government Executive Vice President

Amit Khanduri, T & M Class of 2013, has been elected Executive Vice President of Georgia Tech's Student Government Association. Amit and his running mate, Eran Mordel, won by more than 1,000 votes in the April 9th election. They will be responsible for allocating $5 million in funds to student groups and campus departments.

A fourth-year business administration major, Amit believes this budget puts the Georgia Tech SGA in a unique position.

"This, along with the committees we serve on, makes GT SGA one of the most autonomous among its peer institutions," he said. "It's all about the students' potential and responsibility that the administration has entrusted us with."
