"Let's
Talk Business Live!" radio show host Mitch Schlimer will lead the Monday,
April 11 event in Georgia Tech's IMPACT Speaker Series, facilitating a panel
discussion on "Social Entrepreneurship and Entrepreneurs" for online
broadcast.
Held
at 4:30 PM in LeCraw Auditorium of Georgia Tech College of Management, the
panel will feature Laura Hodgson, CEO of Nourish; David Murphy, CEO of Better
World Books; and Scott Schickler, CEO of Excent.
Free
and open to the public, the weekly IMPACT Speaker Series brings notable
business executives, high-tech entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and
intellectual leaders to Georgia Tech.
Mitch Schlimer, founder of
the Let's Talk Business Network, began his entrepreneurial career at the age of
five, selling pretzels from a street cart with his grandfather in Queens, New
York. Later while operating Mitch Schlimer Tennis Academy and pro shops in the
late 1970s, he was robbed numerous times, leading him to create a video system
for recording homes and businesses for insurance purposes. He later retired
from the tennis industry and founded a comprehensive video services company,
which did video inventories, video yearbooks, video wills and depositions,
sales and training tapes, among other products. He is founder and executive director of the Entrepreneur Hall of Fame & Museum.
Panelist
Lara Hodgson co-founded Nourish shortly after becoming a mom. As a serial entrepreneur
and a motivational speaker on innovation, she saw a need for products to
address the fact that moms and kids have busy, on-the-go lives. Nourish
recently introduced its first products: Nourish Baby, a formula-ready bottled
water for babies; and Nourish Toddler, a spill-proof bottled water for
toddlers. Hodgson also is the co-founder and CEO of Insomnia, LLC, an
Atlanta-based firm specializing in investment, development and management of
complex and innovative world-changing projects.
Panelist David Murphy leads
Better World Books in its mission to improve literacy. The online bookseller
has provided more than $6.5 million in funding to its nonprofit literacy
partners and libraries working on four continents, donated more than 1.4
million books, and saved more than 27 million pounds of books from landfills.
Murphy has 23 years of leadership experience in corporate finance, operations,
and mergers and acquisitions with firms such as International Paper Company and
The First Boston Corporation. He has also started several companies as well as
served as CFO, COO, and CEO for both privately held and publicly traded firms
in the manufacturing, health care services, and technology sectors.
Panelist Scott Shickler founded Excent, a global education company
serving millions of students and teachers in more than 20 states and 10
countries. It provides data solutions and direct training services to
educators. Also co-founder of the Magic Wand Foundation, which empowers
children to live their dreams, Shickler is a serial entrepreneur who has owned
several multi-million businesses. He is a best-selling author and expert on
youth empowerment who has been featured in a variety of leading media,
including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, CNN and NBC
News.
The IMPACT Speaker Series is organized by the Institute for
Leadership and Entrepreneurship at Georgia Tech.
