The pressure to succeed in a competitive business environment can be overriding and a sense of honor, integrity and character can too easily be lost along the way. Addressing these issues with the next generation of global business leaders has never been more important. The Cecil B. Day Program in Business Ethics was created to do just that.
The program kicked off in October to a crowd of about 350 and a panel of distinguished alumni, including: Seletha Butler, MBA 2010, assistant professor of law and ethics at Scheller College; Kathie Day, IM 1978, owner of Kathleen Day and Associates; Peyton Day, IM 1983, chairman and CEO of Day Hospitality Group; Marion Glover, IM 1965, president and CEO of Glover Capital; and Dennis James, IM 1992, CEO of International Media Technologies.
In November, Kelly Barrett, IM 1986, Vice President, Internal Audit and Corporate Compliance at The Home Depot spoke to a group of students about "The Home Depot’s Business Ethics in Action," an overview about how the corporate Business Code of Conduct works and all of the programs that it runs to keep ethical behavior top of mind. Later that same month, Steve Buffington, IM 1977, Vice President Supply Chain (SC) for Atlanta based Coca-Cola Company, spoke to the Scheller College Advisory Board about his company’s Code of Business Conduct and how the Shared Value of Integrity is a big part of setting the tone at the top.
"Cecil Day exhibited a life of integrity, both in what he believed and how he lived," says Dean Salbu, who is also the Stephen P. Zelnak Jr. chairholder. "At the foundation of his business practices was his desire to be a faithful steward and to treat people fairly and honestly. What better example could there be for business students and other Tech students to have?"
These events are examples of similar offerings to come in 2014.
About Cecil B. Day
A loyal graduate of Georgia Tech, Cecil B. Day highly valued the education he received from the Institute. He was a strong proponent of public education, seeing it as the prime arena for the discussion of issues affecting the nation and as a source of creative and innovative training of future business leaders.
Founder of Day’s Inn in 1970, Day was committed to providing the traveling public with quality rooms and courteous service. Within eight years, his Atlanta-based company had grown to more than 300 hotels in the United States and Canada. Today, Days Inn Worldwide franchises more than 1,900 hotels in 15 countries. He died in 1978.
