A good foundation and understanding of how technology management differs from "traditional" management is important for all careers. Students who recognize the importance of developing knowledge that facilitates the transfer of technical and scientific expertise into business innovation will thrive in almost any business market.


Georgia Tech is at the forefront of preparing students to succeed and lead in technical business environments. The interdisciplinary approach of our Management of Technology electives integrates student collaboration across every college on the Georgia Tech campus.

Focus is on the creation, implementation, and integration of technological and scientific innovations to drive the strategic, operational, and managerial decision-making objectives of an organization.



Partial List of Courses

Collaborative Product Development (MGT 6326)

Despite the growing importance of innovation as a firm capability that drives sustainable competitive advantage, less attention has been given to the operational execution of corporate innovation initiatives. This course focuses on the management challenges that organizations face when they try to transform innovative ideas into reality. Through a combination of case studies, in-class exercises, and an ongoing semester project, the class participants are exposed to a series of tools and frameworks that address both project/process effectiveness as well as organizational enablers of successful product development.


Legal Issues in Technology Transfer (MGT 6799)

Move ideas from the research domain. This course focuses on the study and analysis of U.S. law as it applies to the patenting and licensing processes.


Managing Resources of the Technological Firm (MGT 6771)

The course focuses on analysis of the challenges associated with managing a firm's resource capabilities for long- term competitive advantage. Particular emphasis is placed on planning under conditions including rapid technological innovation, international competition, and changing markets. Specific topics include positioning strategies, innovation and diffusion, technology strategy, knowledge management, integration of product and process design, performance measurement, and implementation of new technology.


Special Topics: Project Management (MGT 8803)

This course will cover the different techniques for managing projects, with a focus on IT projects. Using a mix of real-world cases, in-class exercises, and computer-based training, students will learn how to apply Earned Value Analysis, Risk Analysis, and Cost Estimation as well as other techniques to manage and evaluate IT projects and programs.
